Harvest Crush in Penedès
A grape-picking, wine tasting, grape crushing, eating and drinking experience August/September/October
At harvest time in Penedes, the roads between vineyards and wineries are streaked with juice, and the smell of fermenting grape wafts in the air. After sunset the landscape vibrates with processions of tractors on their way to the bodegas and presses. If you'd like to touch the grape in every way imaginable, we promise you grapes up to your eyes.
Our host will have a section of vineyard reserved for us and will explain the history of the vineyard and basic method for picking before giving us our clippers.
Once picking you will be surprised how hard it is to stop as a dormant gene deep inside you tingles with joy of collecting ripe fruit. We follow the grapes to the Bodega and watch the pressing and beginning of the wine-making process. Then it's time for the grape crushing ceremony. This is performed bare foot and everybody participates to press the juice from the grapes.
Once we have made our offering to Baccus (the god of wine) we clean off with fresh water and sun. A wonderful harvest buffet awaits us, fresh bread smeared Catalan style with tomato, oil and salt, patés and cold meats, grilled red peppers and aubergines, Mediterranean salads, barbecued Catalan sausages and meats all accompanied by a full selection of hearty local wines.
