A Catalan Christmas Wine Selection

Christmas dinner in this age of long distance romance and trans-global partnerships could mean anything from broccoli salad to borscht, duck or sushi , creme bruleé or plum pudding, so here’s a wine tasting list all the way from the vineyards of Catalunya that should keep everyone entertained.

White and Rosé wines:
Tradition with flavour for all, Xarel.lo, Macabeo and Parellada add up to a tasty medium dry white in Blanc de Pacs from Parés Baltà. Like to meet a bright new “multinational” native /classic varietal fusion with a Terrasola Sauvignon Blanc / Xarel.lo from Jean Leon or a sensitively oak fermented Xarel.lo /Chardonnay from Castellroig. Crisp citrus World variety with the Sauvignon Blanc from Miguel Jané. Well coloured mature Merlot rosé from Torreblanca or equally well coloured and entertaining and floral Pinot Noir rosé from Parato
Red wines:
True to the original fruit Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot red organic from Roses Vila. Naveran, Don Pablo for an exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon reserva. Bru de Gramona ‘01, a luscious fenolic Pinot Noir to dwell over. Mas Irene ’99 is a potent and highly expressive Cabernet Franc / Merlot
Privat offers a deep concentrated spicy, woody organic Merlot
Primitiu de Bellmunt ‘01 drop by drop perfect, grandfather of old vine Priorat Garnatxa / Carinenya. Mas Comtal, Petrea ‘00, hedonistic uncompromising extra mature Merlot.
Bubbly time and sweets
Trepat / Pinot Noir colour-as-art rosé Cava from Jaume Giro Giro
Excellence with a bubble, Tradition spiced with Chardonnay Cava Brut Nature Reserva from
Eudald Massana Noya. Dolç de Octubre by Nadal for a late harvested light digestive.
Have a nice one or two.
