Penedès Wines



After the Philoxera blight of the 1890, Penedès was fast to recover and instead of replanting red varieties switched almost completely to white varieties suitable for the production of Sparkling wines. Led by the two largest producers Codorniu and Freixanet, this product has made its mark around the world. Behind the two giants there are some 100 small and medium sized quality producers.
Since the 1960s red varieties have been making a comeback. You will find wonderful Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir but also Tempranillo, Grenache and even rarer Caladoc and Sumoll making a comeback. The style is rich and fruit forward with complexity and elegance.
Penedès continues to be one of the most innovative wine regions in Spain with the first sparkling wines (Codorniu 1890s), petillant wines (Bodegas Pinord), first classic varieties Cabernet and Chardonnay (Jean Leon 1962), Merlots (Joan Mila/Mas Contal) and organic wines (Albet i Noya 1982).

Cava,
Sparkling wine produced with Xarello, Macabeo, Parellada, Trepat, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varieties. Observe the quality of mousse, persistence and size of bubbles (the smaller the older and finer) aromas of pinapple, pear, lemon tending towards almond, dry fruit. Pay from 5 - 15 euros for quality, stick to Brut Nature (no extra sugar) or Brut if you have a sweet tooth. Bottles that have been aged for at least 2 years are best.
Look out for Nadal, Llopart, Gramona, Recaredo, Ferret, Jaume Giro Giro, Mas Tinell, Marrugat, Colet, La Xarmada...

Rosé cavas
Salvador Dalí would offer a glass of sparkling rosé to his guests. Before the banquet at the last Spanish royal wedding in Spain a rosé cava was served. There are over 70 quality rose cavas and their provocative red effervesence is rising in popularity all over northern Europe as well as Spain.
Keep an eye open for Carles Andreu, Nadal, Giro Ribot, Albet i Noya...

Xarel.lo.
Single varietal white wines produced with the native Xarel.lo variety have structure and solid acidity. Aromas are light with presence of pear and apple. The typical “granny smith” character will be pleasantly stretched by slow fermentation, batonage with the lees and ageing in oak.
Look out for Albet i Noya, Can Ramon, Eudald Massana Noya, Nadal, Gramona, Castellroig...

White varietal blends
These usually combine one of the established local varieties of Xarel.lo, Macabeo and Parellada with Chardonnnay, Muscatel, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewúrtztraminer or Chenin Blanc to produce crisp entertaining wines that go well with salads and seafood or just as an appetiser.
Look out for Can Feixes, Castellroig, Pere Ventura, Mas Comtal, Pinord…

Aged White Wines
Usually Xarel.lo and/or Chardonnay from older vines. Wines are fermented in new oak barrels or stainless steel tanks, batonage with the lees, malolactic fermentation to soften acidity with later ageing of between 3 and 6 months in new oak. Good the first year but usually better after 2 or three years. Enjoy with slow cooked duck or Penedès rooster

Rosé
These wines have undergone a revolution, some might even say a change of sexual orientation. Merlot predominates but there are great Pinot Noirs, Cabernets as well as local varieties Tempranillo and Grenache. Grapes from mature vines are macerated to extract stronger colour, more flavour, aroma and body. These are wines for a romantic picnic basket but also add to the enjoyment of provocative pasta and seafood, at any time of the day or night!

Reds, young and aged
Penedès is well able to produce wonderful reds full of Mediterranean life and fruit with plenty of concentration and depth The dark colours and pleasant acidity of Syrah are a welcome addition when blended with native Garnatxa and Carinenya or on its own in the case of The Albet i Noya Collection. Wine makers in Penedès place the emphasis on the fruit with adequate ageing in Barrels to soften tannins and polish the wine. Wines may be Reserva (12 months in oak) or Gran Reserva (24 months in oak) but this is rarely mentioned on the labels of quality Catalan wines. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir produce wines with structure, fruit and plenty of balsamic flavours
