Eudald Massana Noya

At Eudald Massana Noya, biodynamics has formed part of the house philosophy for generations, and extends to the beams of the warehouses which were planted and felled by the present owners grandfather in accordance with the beat and heat of the moon. Today this conversation with nature is complimented with organic cultivation and a detailed policy of material recycling as deep in spirit as the quality of the wines.
Eudald Massana Noya, the master of the house, is passionately determined to extract the very best from his 35 hectacres and the results were apparent during last November’s El Molí Catalan Wine Challenge when their wines and cavas impressed mightily.
We drove up the gravel drive on a bright fresh January morning. The attractive bodega sits on the edge of a shallow valley surrounded by nature with views down to the 12th C Monastery of Sant Sebastian dels Gorgs.
After the hour long drive from Barcelona, the first taste of cava cleared any contaminating memory of the big smoke. Cava Brut Nature Reserva Eudald Massana Noya ages for a minimum of 30 months. The traditional varieties of Macabeo, Xarel.lo, and Parellada are accompanied by Chardonnay. This straw coloured cava has good weight and body. The tiny bubbles are characteristic of long ageing as is the attack which is smooth and fine. Aroma is of fresh almonds and compliments the generous range of mature pear and apricot flavours which refresh the whole mouth.

L’Avi Ton is a white wine produced from 50 year old Xarello vines of reduced yield. After a light pressing the must, still macerating with the skins, is chilled to stabilise. It starts fermentation in stainless steel tanks at the lowest possible temperature (16–17ºC) before finishing off in French oak barrels to add a touch of vanilla. Batonage of the lees for a further 4 months adds butter, body and complexity to the brew.
On the nose you get long whiffs of mature fruit such as quince and apple sauce that repeat in the mouth. The attack is fresh, with elegant flavours that are very evenly spread out. This wine will have queues where ever it goes.
To complete our introduction to the top of the range wines of the house we tasted La Creueta, an aged red wine (12 months in French and American oak) produced with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. While the Avi Ton and Cava Nature Reserva were complimented by a bright crisp winter morning, La Creueta, was something of a sleeping beauty, despite having being decanted. Nevertheless, it showed intense range of colour, with mature prune and berry aromas backed up by spices and toast. Again the emphasis was not on ageing or the wood but on the original mature fruit that was present in plum pudding fulls.
After our very tour and tasting accompanied by owner and winemaker Eudald, we stepped into the winery shop which would warrant a visit on its own. The full range of bottled wines is complimented by organic table wine from the barrel, bottled grape juice, olive oils and fruit preserves as well as beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables. A number of our visitors took a fancy to the embossed long stemmed fluted cava glasses which will go down a bomb in Santa Cruz.
Cavas Eudald Massana Noya produces a total of about 120,000 bottles of wine and cava annually. In recent years they have won awards nationally such as the Zarcillo of Castillo Leon. Yet, most of their stock sells at gobsmackingly low prices. They happily admit that sales remain more a matter of word of mouth…spread it around.
To get to the Eudald Massana Noya winery take the N340 from Barcelona (Molins de Rei). As soon as you come down into Penedès, turn right for Sant Pau d’Ordal and Sant Sebastian dels Gorgs. The bodega is on your left, just after Sant Pau d’Ordal.
