Alt Penedès is one hour from the centre of Barcelona, There are 7 train stations of the Renfe Cercanies 4 line in Penedes. Gelida, Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, Lavern/Subirats, la Granada, Vilafranca del Penedès and els Monjos. From these stations it is possible to visit any part of Penedès by bicycle using quiet and scenic country roads and lanes. 60 sleepy towns and over 150 cavas and wineries are waiting for you.
Biking Penedès is El Molí Tours way of getting more people onto bikes and using routes of Penedès. We hope these routes will form the basis of the Green Ways of Penedès or Camins Verdes del Penedès. Used mostly by farmers, the routes are quiet, easy and safe are perfect for young cyclists and anyone who wants to take the greener path, we believe in keeping them as green as possible, so take it easy, say hello to locals and other users (bon dia!), and have a great time.
We have selected 3 routes around the historic wine capital of Vilafranca. These include the Pilgrim route and its variants from Vilafranca del Penedès to Torrelles de Foix, the Carrerada route from Torrelles de Foix to Sant Pau d'Ordal and the Via Augusta route between Sant Pau d'Ordal and Vilafranca. These historic routes have been bypassed by modern roads and highways and are perfect for relaxed touring. We invite you to use the maps and route notes and let your friends know about them.
These routes are a guide. We actually hope you get a little lost while discovering the beautiful interior of Barcelona's wine garden . Remember to get in or out of Penedes you need to climb mountains. Main roads run in radials out of Vilafranca and Sant Sadurni the two main towns. If you find yourself on a busy road, there will always be an alternative lane or backroad nearby. Look out for lines of almond and olive trees and telegraph poles that indicate small lanes. There are wonderful small roads running along the base of the hills and between small villages. Rivers run to the sea and there are often paths beside them. Country houses face south and the Mediterranean coast (the old barrel room is on the cool north side). Beautiful Montserrat mountain in the north. To the east the Garraf mountains separate us from the Mediterranean and keep an eye on the spire of the Santa Maria Cathederal of Vilafranca in the middle of Alt Penedès.
Happy cycling,
cheers and all the best, Paddy Mannion
